All About PatronChimp

Updated on

Heads up! This article is about a legacy integration. If you're just getting started with connecting Mailchimp to PatronManager, you should use the new and much improved official Mailchimp integration instead. Click here to learn more!

PatronChimp is our legacy custom-built integration between PatronManager and MailChimp. Read on to learn more!

Overview

How does it work?

PatronChimp allows you to create recipient lists for your email campaigns using reports in PatronManager. You'll click a button to export these reports to MailChimp as "static segments," then on the MailChimp side, choose that "static segment" (called "Tags" in MailChimp) as your recipient list (called "Audiences" in MailChimp).

You'll create, design, and send your campaigns from MailChimp. Once a campaign is sent, it will appear in the Campaigns tab in PatronManager, and the campaign stats will sync back to PatronManager as well.

We'll also create Campaign Member records for all of the campaign recipients so you can see their specific activity (opens and clicks) right on their Contact page.

What does it cost?

The PatronChimp integration is free to use, and there's no setup fee to get it up and running. This includes a data import from your current email marketing system.

MailChimp's fee structure is based on list size. It's free if you have up to 2,000 email addresses on your list -- most of our clients have more than that, so instead you'll get to take advantage of MailChimp's 15% discount for nonprofit organizations.

You can start a free trial right away using this special referral link that will identify you as a PatronManager customer.

For detailed pricing info, click here and use the cost calculator to see an estimated, pre-discount price. Remember that our non-profit clients can receive a 15% discount on any plan you choose!

How do opt-outs and bounces work?

PatronManager uses the "Email Status" field to track a patron's opt-in/opt-out/bounced status for all of your email marketing efforts. If a patron opts-out or their email address bounces as a result of a MailChimp campaign you've sent using the PatronChimp integration, that status will automatically sync back to PatronManager.

MailChimp also stores opt-out/bounce data connected to each email address in their system, which makes it impossible to accidentally email someone who has opted out via MailChimp, even in unusual cases where their status might not sync back to PatronManager (for example, if they opted out of your mailing list directly through MailChimp and not in response to a particular campaign).

Can I view and report on detailed campaign statistics, like open rate?

Absolutely! You can do that easily right within MailChimp. Read their article about it here

Can I use a MailChimp signup form?

We recommend using a PatronManager Signup Form rather than a MailChimp signup form. New signups from a MailChimp form will not cross over into PatronManager automatically, so it's better to use PatronManager to collect and store all of your patron data, and use MailChimp specifically for email outreach.

Getting Started

How do I start using PatronChimp?

The PatronChimp legacy integration is no longer recommended. If you're not already using it, you should use the new official Mailchimp integration instead. Learn more here!

I already have a MailChimp account!

That's great! There's one key difference between using standalone MailChimp and using MailChimp with the PatronChimp integration, which means you have one extra step to complete before we can install PatronChimp for you.

Read this before you move forward.

Using PatronChimp

PatronChimp is installed, now what?

Great! This article will walk you through the steps to create a PatronChimp campaign.

I'm already using PatronChimp, and I have more questions!

Other Email Marketing Integrations

I heard there's a "MailChimp for Salesforce" app. Can I use that instead?

Not only can, but should! MailChimp's legacy Salesforce integration was not compatible with PatronManager, but their new official integration (built by Beaufort 12), IS compatible, and we highly recommend it! Learn more here.

What about Emma?

We also offer integration with Emma email marketing. This article has more information.
