Barcode Scanning Device Buyer's Guide: https://help.pm.leapevent.tech/a/1151493
You're ready to start scanning tickets? You'll need the PatronTicket Barcode Scanning app as well as a compatible device.
This article will cover:
How to choose an Android device
To use Barcode scanning in PatronManager you will need an Android Mobile device capable of running the PatronTicket Barcode Scanner app, available from the Google Play store. Pretty much any modern Android phone will work.
If you're shopping for a new device:
- Choose one with a good camera, particularly in low light settings if the lighting where you scan tickets is dim
- Choose a device that runs Android 11 or higher
Most Android devices running a current Android OS version will work just fine; if you have other or older Android devices on hand, you can certainly give them a try.
If you choose devices that aren't on our verified list, we'd suggest purchasing just one to start (with a good return policy), or borrowing one and testing it out.
In particular, test that it works as expected in your planned environment (e.g. use it in the light level you'd have in a lobby pre-show), and if you plan to use optional scanners, test that it connects to them properly.
Can you help me set up or troubleshoot my Android device?
No. We do not provide device-specific support or troubleshooting.
Our team tests newer Android devices periodically that we believe are a good fit for our clients' needs. We select devices based on cost, camera quality (particularly the camera's ability to function in low light), hardware spec, and expected longevity (the length of time we expect the device to receive OS updates and support from the manufacturer). We also test each release with our most recently listed device to ensure ongoing compatibility.
We are sure that our current tested device works as expected, and comparable or newer devices should work as well.
Verified compatible Android mobile devices
Google Pixel 6a
We currently test updates with the Google Pixel 6a. It has an excellent camera that works well for scanning even in low light, and is more affordable than many devices of similar quality.
The devices below have been retired by the manufacturers, but were previously tested and verified compatible. If you have any on hand, they will likely still work, but if you're purchasing new devices we suggest our current verified device above.
Built-In Camera with Auto-Focus
If you decide to use the Android device's built-in camera for barcode scanning, make sure that the camera has auto-focus. This is a requirement for barcode scanning if you're not using an additional bluetooth scanner.
Google Pixel 4a
The Google Pixel 4a was our previously recommended device. As of January 2023 it still works just fine, and it's upgradeable to Android 13 so we don't expect it to stop working anytime soon. As it's becoming more difficult to source, we now recommend the Pixel 6a instead, but if you have a 4a, you can certainly keep using it.
While the Barcode Scanner app is currently still compatible with older devices running Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) and above, those older devices will be phased out soon.
If you are in the market for a new device, we strongly recommend choosing a device that runs Android 11 or higher.
Nokia 6
While the Nokia 6 was previously recommended and will likely continue working for now, it can't be updated past Android 9. At some point older versions of Android will no longer be able to run the Barcode Scanner app, so if you're looking for a new device, we don't recommend this one.
Motorola MotoG5 PLUS
While this device was previously recommended and will likely continue working for now, it can't be updated past Android 8. At some point older versions of Android will no longer be able to run the Barcode Scanner app, so if you're looking for a new device, we don't recommend this one.
Should I just buy a mobile device, or should I also buy a scanner?
We no longer recommend purchasing Socket Mobile scanners.
Thanks to continual improvements to phone camera technology, the Android devices we've tested in recent years are fully capable of scanning tickets with the built-in camera, even in low light.
The phone also provides on-screen instructions to users, whereas some clients report that their ticket takers have trouble holding scanners at correct/consistent distances from the tickets.
If you're using an older Android device with a lower-quality camera, a scanner can sometimes help in low-light situations. Since those older devices are approaching end-of-life, though, we'd recommend investing in a new Android rather than buying a scanner.
You could also consider purchasing a small light to help increase visibility at your ticket entry points.
Compatible scanners
Perhaps you found some scanners in a closet or received one as a gift, and are wondering if they'll work. These are the scanners that are compatible with PatronManager's barcode scanning app.
PatronManager is only compatible with Socket Mobile scanning devices. Any other product not listed in this article is not compatible and will not work.
Socket Mobile SocketScan S820
The Socket Mobile S820 is the latest compatible scanner for PatronManager. It's small, thin, easy to use, and comes with a "Universal Klip" that enables you to securely attach it to your Android mobile device for a one-handed scanning solution.
Socket Mobile SocketScan S840
The Socket Mobile S840 is the older version of the S820, and is still compatible with PatronManager. It's very similar to the S820 and also includes the "Universal Klip".
These scanners only come with an USB cable for charging, so unless you plan to charge it on your computer when not in use, make sure you have a power point with a USB output available.
How to use your device
Once you purchase your device, you'll first need to set your device(s) up - installing the app, connecting it with PatronManager, etc.
Then you can start scanning tickets!
Once you've set your device(s) up, we recommend keeping both the Patron Ticket Barcode Scanning app and your Androids OS up-to-date to ensure that everything continues to run smoothly.
