Gift cards are great, but wouldn't it be nice for your patrons to use them online instead of calling your office when they wanted to redeem them?

They can! With STS Gift Cards, patrons can now redeem them on your Public Ticketing Site (PTS). In this article, we'll go over:

  1. How it looks and works for your patrons
  2. How to turn it on
  3. Some frequently asked questions

Turning on the feature should take about five minutes - as long as your account is ready to use it.

How your patrons use gift cards online

Once you've enabled the feature, your patrons will can use their gift cards on the purchase path as normal:

Here's the standard purchase process

1. Your patron will put tickets in their cart and go through the majority of the purchase path as normal

Not sure how your patrons use the PTS? Check it out.

2. When they get to the payment screen, they'll click the Use Gift Card button

3. They'll enter their gift card number and click Check Balance

Your patron can find their gift card number on:

  • The physical card
  • The confirmation email (for an electronic gift card)
  • The text message (for a mobile gift card)

4. What they'll do next depends on the balance remaining on their gift card

If they can pay for the entire order with their gift card:
After reviewing their current balance, they'll click Submit
Success! They'll see their new gift card balance at the top of the Order Confirmation screen
If the gift card balance is less than the order total:
After reviewing their current balance, they'll click Yes to apply their gift card
They'll be prompted to pay the remaining balance with their credit card and click Submit
Success!

5. And they're done!

How to enable Online Gift Card redemption

Ready to get started? To enable Gift Card redemption on your PTS, we'll jump into PatronTicket settings real quick.

Remember: Online Gift Card Redemption is only possible if you use the STS integration with PatronManager!

Let's do it

1. Head to the PatronTicket Hub, then click into PatronTicket Settings

2. Click Edit

3. Scroll down to the Payment, Fee, and Delivery Settings section

4. Check the "Accept Gift Cards on the PTS" box

5. Scroll up and click Save

6. You're done!

So what happens if...

I turned on the feature, but my patrons aren't seeing the option to use gift cards on our Public Ticketing Site - what gives?

Are you using STS and is it integrated with PatronManager? Online gift card redemption is only available if you're using STS.

My patron has two gift cards to use?

Your patron should call in to your office, as you'll need to process this order over the phone for now. Specifically, you'll need to process this as multiple partial payments.

If you'd like to see this as part of the online redemption process, let us know! Suggest a Product Idea via the Community, and we'll make sure our Product Development Team gets the word.

Their gift card balance is $0?

They'll receive an error message telling them so!

My patron only wants to use part of their gift card - not the whole balance?

Your patron should call in to your office, as you'll need to process their order over the phone.

My patron enters the wrong card number?

They'll receive an error message telling them so!

Their gift card doesn't cover the sales tax and/or fees?

That's fine - as long as they have a credit card to cover the remaining balance. We do always recommend being aware of your state's regulations regarding partial payments and sales tax, however.

Their credit card (paying for the remaining balance) is declined?

They'll receive an error message telling them so, and they can try again.

There was a (rare) glitch while submitting the order with both a gift card and a credit card, and only one of the two payments went through?

Their order will still be created, but end up in payment limbo. Your patron will receive a special email (which you can customize), and the Order Fulfillment Administrator will receive a task notification to alert them of the situation.

I don't want to offer online redemption?

That's fine! You can always uncheck the option to "Accept Gift Cards on the PTS" in PatronTicket Settings. If you choose not to allow patrons to use their gift cards for online purchases, though, we recommend making this very clear on your website (and wherever you sell gift cards) to avoid confusion.
