Have you ever wanted to change how your Donation, Contact, or Account pages are set up?  Are you frustrated that, when you look at the Donations section on your Account pages, it doesn't sort the donations by newest to oldest?  Well, then, you are in the right place!

There are two ways to change the appearance of your accounts contacts and donations: the Lightning App Builder and the page layout editor

In this article, we'll show you the ins and outs of customizing your record pages to suit your needs.  We'll go over how to:

Let's jump right in!

The Highlights panel

The Highlights panel, also known as a Compact Layout, controls the fields that are visible at the top of the page, as well as the fields that display when you hover over a lookup field.  You can customize which fields show on the Highlights panel to suit your organization's needs.

How do I edit the Highlights panel?

1. Let's go edit the Highlights panel on the Account - click on the gear and go to Setup

2. Go to the Object Manager and click on Account

3. Go to the Compact Layouts tab in the left panel and click on PMGR Default Account Layout

4. Click "Clone"

5. Give your layout a name and select the fields you want to add

Add a name to the Label and select and move the fields you want to add
  1. Label: Name your Highlights panel / Compact Layout
  2. Highlight the fields you want to add from the Available Fields, then use the arrows to move them to the Selected Fields. In this example we've added a couple Account Donation rollup fields.

6. Reorder the selected fields if needed, then click "Save"

Use the arrows to reorder your fields, then Save

7. Click back to the main Compact Layouts page

Click back to Compact Layouts

8. Click "Compact Layout Assignment"

Click Compact Layout Assignment

9. Click "Edit Assignment"

Click Edit Assignment

10. Use the dropdown menu to select your new layout as the Primary Compact Layout

Select your new layout as the Primary Compact Layout

11. Click "Save"

Click Save

12. The fields now appear on the Highlights panel on the Account!

Want to learn more about Highlight panels in Lightning?

Here's a great Trailhead resource directly from Salesforce:  Customize Record Highlights with Compact Layouts

Introducing the Lightning App Builder

When Salesforce rolled out the Lightning Experience, they introduced a powerful and user-friendly way to tweak the appearance of your record page - the Lightning App Builder.

This tool allows you to add new sections (called components) to various areas of the record page.

What can I do with the Lightning App Builder?

You can add a specific related list to the top of your record page, like we did with April and Andy's Donation history here.

You can add specific text that appears only when an Account or Contact meets certain criteria, such as being a major donor - very similar to how a badge works, but with more room for text!

And so much more!

How to access the Lightning App Builder

1. Decide what object you're tweaking the record page of - Accounts, Contacts, or Donations?

For this example, we'd like to adjust how our Account record page appears.

2. Click on any record of the object you're tweaking the appearance of

We're going to click on April Ludgate and Andy Dwyer.

3. Click on the gear icon at the top right; then, click on "Edit Page"

4. You're here!

How do I learn how to use it?

Salesforce has done a great job documenting this in Trailhead! We highly recommend using this incredible resource they've put together.

If you're not familiar with Trailhead, learn more about it here.

I just want to tweak how the fields appear in the Detail section of the record page

Great! You'll tweak that using Page Layouts. We walk you through that process below.

Find the page layout edit screen

There's two ways to get to the page layout edit screen.  The most consistent way is to go through Setup; the fastest way is directly through a page whose layout you want to edit.

We recommend learning the Setup method first - click here to follow along
1. Click on the gear icon and Setup
2. Click on Object Manager

In this example, we want to edit the Household Account page layout, so we'll click on Account.

But I'm not looking for Account page layouts!

  • Click on or search for "contact" to find your Contact object
  • Click on or search for "donation" to find your Donation object
4. Click on "Page Layouts" in the left sidebar
You can also get to the page layout screen directly from the page you want to edit - click here to learn how
2. Click on the Detail section
3. Click on the page layout you'd like to edit

Heads up!

  • Not every record will have a "Edit Page Layout" link on it, so you'll have to use the Setup method for those types of records
  • Not all objects can have their page layout edited.
  • This method takes you directly to the page layout for the Record Type corresponding to the record you went through.  For example, if you click "Edit Page Layout" on a Household Account, you'll be editing the Household Account Page Layout - not the Individual Account Page Layout.

Move, add, or remove fields

Move fields by dragging and dropping them around the page
Add fields by drag-and-dropping them from the palette at the top of the screen

Pro-tip!  Click greyed-out fields in the palette to find where they are on the page layout.

Remove unwanted fields by hovering near them and then clicking the circle that appears

You can also remove fields by dragging them off the page layout and up to the palette.

These fields are not removed from your system - they're just returned to the palette at the top of the screen.

Don't forget to Save your work when you're done!

Your related lists are the sections at the bottom of the page layout, like "Donations", "Ticket Orders", etc.  Scroll down to find them.

Don't forget to Save your work when you're done!

Need to edit multiple page layouts (Individual Accounts, Household Accounts, Business Accounts, etc.)?

Instead of going through Setup to find each page layout you need to change, you can do everything right from this screen!

Save your changes with Quick Save
Scroll up to the very top of the page and use this drop-down menu to select the next page layout you want to edit

If you need to work on a page layout of a different object (e.g. you were updating Account page layouts, but now you need to update Donation page layouts), you'll need to start over from the beginning.

Assigning Page Layouts

Every record type for an object has an assigned page layout. This allows different records to look different and show you relevant fields, even though they may be the same object!

Assigned page layouts are what allow your Grant Payment records to look different from your Pledge records, even though they're both built on the Donation object.

Want to learn more about record types? We've got more information for you here!

So how do you assign a page layout to a record type? We'll show you how to in Setup!
