We know the move to Lightning can feel big and intimidating, and that's why we've collected everything you need to do to optimize Lightning Experience in PatronManager right here, all in one place.

We've split the optimization up into ten chapters; we recommend you complete one or two sections per day.

  1. Get to know Lightning (and tell your team about it)
  2. Compact and page layouts
  3. Apps, snapshots, and themes
  4. Update and add Lightning Actions
  5. Address common Lightning quirks
  6. Discover additional customizations
  7. Make further customizations (if necessary)
  8. Bring users to Lightning and remove buttons from Classic

Be sure to print off the Lightning Transition Checklist PDF below and mark your progress as you go through these steps - you got this!

Did you log in and find yourself automatically switched to Lightning where nothing looks like our screenshots? If so, you'll need to switch from Lightning to Classic, then go through these set up steps to get Lightning up and working for your account!

You can jump to step 3 to begin optimizing Lightning for PatronManager.

Complete each step along the way!

In most of the steps below, we link to an article containing specific step-by-step instructions. You'll need to head to each of those articles, complete the steps there, and then return to this article to continue your journey.

In each of these spots, you'll see the image below:

1. Get to know Lightning (and tell your team about it)

Now is a great time to get acquainted with what Lightning looks like and how you'll continue to work in Lightning. Watch both of the videos below, ask you colleagues to do the same, and tell them, "Hey, PatronManager will look different soon - don't panic, and remember you can turn off the new look if youhave to."

To Do: watch the two videos below and send them to your colleagues.

How PatronManager looks will change - the way you use PatronManager will not

Switching from Lightning to Classic and back again is quick and easy

2. Compact and page layouts

PatronManager is probably looking a little weird to you right now - there's lots of sales-y terminology all over the place, and nothing is recognizable. Not to worry! In this step, we'll:

  • Set the Home Page layout default
  • Set page layout defaults for Accounts, Contacts, Donations, and Campaigns
  • Set compact page layout defaults (see screenshot below)

To Do: complete the steps in our Lightning Transition: Compact and Page Layouts article.

3. Apps, snapshots, and themes

Remember your views in Classic - like Development, Box Office Manager, and Marketing Dept? We've recreated those in Lightning, even better than before, and now you'll make them available for your team.

In this step, we'll:

  • Clean up the App Launcher so it's useful for you and your colleagues (see screenshot below)
  • Add CRM Snapshots to your apps
  • Activate the PatronManager theme (like fresh wallpaper for your new house)

To Do: complete the steps in our Lightning Transition: Apps, Snapshots, and Themes article.

4. Lights, camera, Actions

In Lightning, you'll use actions instead of the buttons you used in Classic (e.g. "New Donations"). Actions are more versatile and much easier to configure.

In this step, we'll:

  • Create any missing actions
  • Add actions to your page layouts

To Do: complete the steps in our Lightning Transition: Actions article.

5. Address common Lightning quirks

Not everything translates 1:1 from Classic to Lightning. As such, there are a couple key features we need to tweak or rebuild to use them in the new interface.

In this step, we'll:

  • Unlock your CRM Snapshots and your Door List Reports (right now they may be unusuable)
  • Rebuild the Mail Merge button you use on your Donation records to quickly print acknowledgment letters
  • Make sure your Contacts and Accounts are playing nicely
  • Make the "Enable Customer User" action auto-fill in Lightning like it does in Classic

To Do: complete the steps in our Lightning Transition: Address Lightning Quirks article.

6. Discover additional customizations

At this point, you've brought the core PatronManager experience over to Lightning. However, if you've customized your Classic account - custom apps, page layouts, buttons, links, etc. - those custom features may need some extra attention to look/work quite right in Lightning.

In this step, we'll:

  • Find out if you're using Notes & Attachments
  • Check for custom page layouts
  • Look at your Lightning Readiness Report
  • Explore Lightning's New Features

To Do:

7. Make further customizations (if necessary)

If you didn't write anything down while discovering additional customizations, guess what - you're done!

If you did, it's time bring those customizations over to Lightning.

To Do: complete the steps in our Lightning Transition: Make further customizations article.

8. Bring users to Lightning and remove buttons from Classic

Well done! You've completed 99% of your Lightning Transition. It's officially time to bring your team to Lightning if they haven't switched already, and remove some old Classic buttons.

You made it! Welcome to Lightning!

Time to throw a party:

Now what?

It's time for all your hard work to pay off - take advantage of our favorite Lightning-only features!
