If you're using PatronManager Virtual Events, you can add action buttons to the player page, which will open a designated URL in a new tab.

While designed to allow for a virtual tip jar (so that patrons can give directly to artists during the course of a stream), you can use these buttons however you'd like. For example:

  • Provide direct links to tip artists via PayPal, Venmo, etc.
  • Upsell merchandise or another show
  • Direct patrons to your email signup form
  • Encourage the viewer to become a member
  • And just about anything else you can dream up!

In this article, we'll cover:

  1. Planning your buttons
  2. Optionally labeling the button row
  3. Creating buttons
  4. FAQs

Adding buttons only takes a few minutes per Event Instance. Let's get started!

1. Plan your buttons

Before you create your buttons, you'll decide on their labels and gather the URLs. If you're adding multiple buttons, you should also plan the order. Here are a few things to consider:

  • Buttons work best with short text titles, not full sentences
  • Make sure you have the right URL(s)
  • Buttons will appear in alphabetical order

2. Label the button row (optional)

This step is optional; if you only want the buttons themselves, you can skip to creating your buttons.

If you want your set of buttons to have a leading label ("Support the artists:" in the image at the top of this article), you can set that on the Event Instance.

2.1. Open the Event Instance and click "Edit"

2.2. Add text to the "Tip Jar Label"

You'll find it at the bottom of the "Virtual Event Information" section:

There is a 20-character limit; if you want to add further text or explanations, we recommend using the rich text content fields that appear below the player (and below the button row).

2.3. Save!

3. Create your buttons

You know what your buttons will be called, you've decided on the order, and you have the links. Let's set them up!

Remember, you can't change the order after you create the buttons.

The first button you create will appear on the right, and subsequent buttons will be added to its left.

3.1. Scroll down to the "Tip Jar Buttons" section and click "New Tip Jar Button"

You won't see this section if you're still in "Edit" mode! Make sure you've saved your Event Instance.

3.2. Fill in the Name and the URL, then save

Be sure to use a complete URL, including the "https://" -- if you don't, your button will not work!

3.3. Click "New Tip Jar Button" again to add another, or use the actions to edit/delete

Repeat until you have all the buttons you need, and make sure the Names and URLs are correct.

4. FAQs

Can I use the same button on multiple Event Instances?

You can create matching buttons (same label and link) on multiple Event Instances, but you'll need to create them for each Event Instance separately.

Can I use the Tip Jar on External Livestreams?

No, the Tip Jar feature is only available for "Livestream (RTMP)" and "Video On Demand" Event Instances.

For "Livestream (External)", you can add links to the "Pre-Stream Content" field for patrons who arrive early - once the livestream begins, they'll leave the player page to view your content elsewhere.

Is there a limit to the number of buttons?

Nope! If you have a lot of buttons, they'll automatically wrap onto the next row.

Can I change the order of the buttons?

Not currently, no -- buttons will appear in the order you create them, with the first button created on the right. If you need to change the order, you'll need to delete and recreate the button(s).

If you'd like to be able to reorder the buttons, please submit a request via the Community and let us know; our Product Development Team listens to every request!

When will the buttons be visible on the player page?

If you add Tip Jar buttons to an Event Instance, they'll be visible on the player page in all states -- before, during and after your livestream, and throughout a VOD.

Note that if you create or edit a button during a stream, it can take up to a minute for the player page to update and show the change.

Why isn't my button working?

Double-check your Button URL: it needs to be a complete URL, including the "https://" part:

  • https://www.google.com will work
  • www.google.com will not
